Valerian is an herb sold as a dietary supplement,  a common ingredient in products promoted as mild sedatives and sleep aids for nervous tension and insomnia

Brewing tea with valerian is the oldest known way that humans have benefited from the relaxing properties of this root. In fact, there are records of valerian tea being prescribed for insomnia from before the year 100 in Greece, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Make a tea with it!  According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, an effective dose of valerian is steeped between 10 and 15 minutes. Start small, brewing a teaspoon for 12 ounces of water.

Side effects of valerian can include headache, stomach upset, mental dullness, excitability, uneasiness, heart disturbances, and even insomnia in some people. A few people feel sluggish in the morning after taking valerian, especially at higher doses.

Always follow a qualified medical/healing professional's advice for your particular body, before ingesting or using any remedy.
