For as long as people have gathered roots, bark, seeds, and leaves, they have also gathered plants reputed to kindle desire.
Nearly every herbal tradition has its aphrodisiacs. Some were foods of courtship and marriage; others were tonics associated with strength and fertility. Still others acquired reputations so provocative that their common names-potency wood, horny goat weed, huanarpo macho-leave little doubt about what people expected of them.
The important word here is reputation. Traditional use is not the same thing as clinical proof. Modern research on many of these plants remains preliminary, and some of the most intriguing evidence comes from laboratory or animal studies rather than human trials. What is remarkably well documented is the persistence of their reputations across cultures and generations. Even modern ethnobotanical reviews continue to record aphrodisiac use as an important part of the traditional history of plants such as Mondia and Safed Musli.
Here are fourteen of the more fascinating members of this botanical tradition.
Damiana - Turnera diffusa
Native to Mexico, Central America, and the American Southwest, damiana may be one of the quintessential herbs of romance.
Its fragrant leaves have traditionally been brewed as tea, infused into alcohol, and incorporated into herbal preparations associated with desire and sensuality. Mexican folk herbalism gave damiana an especially enduring reputation as an herb for lovers.
Unlike some traditional aphrodisiacs that were principally associated with men, damiana has historically been associated with desire in both sexes. Its appeal is also sensory: the dried leaves have a distinctive aromatic character that lends itself naturally to teas, cordials, and bitters.
Whatever modern science eventually makes of damiana, its place in the folklore of desire is firmly established.
Maca - Lepidium meyenii
High in the Peruvian Andes grows an unassuming member of the mustard family with an outsized reputation: maca.
Cultivated at elevations where relatively few food crops thrive, maca has been eaten in Peru for centuries. Traditionally it is as much a food and sustaining tonic as it is an herb.
Over time, maca became particularly associated with stamina, fertility, vitality, and sexual vigor. That combination has made it perhaps the best-known South American "aphrodisiac" in today's international herbal market.

It is a useful reminder that traditional herbalism doesn't always fit neatly into modern taxonomic boxes: sometimes a famous herbal name represents a regional tradition rather than one universally agreed-upon species.
Ashwagandha - Withania somnifera
Ashwagandha belongs to a somewhat different tradition.
In Ayurveda, it is primarily famous as a rasayana-a rejuvenating or restorative herb traditionally associated with strength, resilience, and vitality. Within that broader tradition it also became associated with sexual vigor and reproductive vitality.
That context matters. Ashwagandha's erotic reputation isn't simply "take this and become aroused." It belongs to an older conception in which sexual vitality was one expression of the body's overall vigor.

Ginseng - Panax spp.
The oddly human-shaped root of ginseng has inspired medicinal folklore for centuries.

Tongkat Ali - Eurycoma longifolia
From the forests of Southeast Asia comes tongkat ali, particularly associated with Malaysia and Indonesia.

In Peruvian folk medicine, huanarpo macho has traditionally been specifically associated with male sexual vigor, while plants called huanarpo hembra have been associated with women.
The botanical identity behind the common name can vary; Jatropha macrantha is one species widely associated with huanarpo macho. Ethnobotanical literature documents an especially interesting bit of Peruvian folklore: male and female huanarpo were traditionally assigned to their corresponding sex, with use by the opposite sex even reputed to produce the opposite effect.
Whether or not nature respects such tidy categories, the tradition is a fascinating example of the symbolism surrounding aphrodisiac plants.
Chuchuhuasi - Maytenus spp.
Chuchuhuasi is another celebrated Amazonian bark.
Traditionally prepared as a decoction or, famously, macerated in aguardiente or other alcohol, chuchuhuasi has a broad reputation as a strengthening tonic. Among its many folk associations is sexual vigor.
This isn't merely a modern marketing invention. Interviews with Peruvian traditional healers continue to document an aphrodisiac reputation among the properties attributed to chuchuhuasi, alongside several completely different traditional uses.
Like many Amazonian botanicals, its identity is tied as much to traditional preparation and cultural context as to the dried bark itself.
Suma - Hebanthe eriantha
Sometimes marketed under the rather grandiose name "Brazilian ginseng," suma is not actually a ginseng at all.
The root comes from South America and has traditionally been associated with vitality and physical resilience. Its later reputation as an aphrodisiac fits into the same broad pattern seen with ginseng and ashwagandha: strength, vitality, fertility, and sexuality becoming intertwined.
The "Brazilian ginseng" label is useful commercially but somewhat misleading botanically. Suma has its own South American identity and history.
Safed Musli - Chlorophytum borivilianum
Safed musli has an especially distinguished place in the Indian aphrodisiac tradition.

Mondia - Mondia whitei
Sometimes called African ginger, Mondia whitei is an aromatic climbing plant native to sub-Saharan Africa.
Its roots have food, spice, and traditional herbal uses, but its aphrodisiac reputation is especially prominent. A review of its ethnobotany found improving libido to be among its traditional uses and described aphrodisiac use as the most commonly cited medicinal use in the African traditions surveyed.
There has also been experimental research into this reputation, although much of it involves animals or laboratory preparations and shouldn't be treated as proof of comparable effects in people.
Among lesser-known aphrodisiac plants in North America, Mondia has one of the richest ethnobotanical stories.
Cnidium - Cnidium monnieri
Finally we travel to East Asia for Cnidium monnieri, traditionally known in Chinese herbalism as She Chuang Zi.
The small fruits have a long history in Chinese traditional practice and became associated with sexuality in both men and women. Traditional literature includes uses connected with impotence and what older Western translations rather inelegantly called "frigidity."
Cnidium is particularly interesting chemically because its fruits contain coumarins, including osthole, which has attracted considerable scientific interest. But laboratory activity shouldn't be confused with proof that eating an herb produces a particular clinical result. Reviews of the plant specifically note the need for additional toxicological and clinical research.
The Common Thread
These plants come from remarkably different places: the Andes, Amazonia, India, China, Southeast Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa. Yet the stories surrounding them repeatedly converge.
Traditional aphrodisiacs are rarely just about sex.
They are plants of vitality, fertility, stamina, warmth, strength, courtship, reproduction, and rejuvenation. In many traditional systems, a vigorous sexual appetite was viewed not as an isolated bodily function but as evidence of vitality more generally.
That may be the most interesting thing about the old herbal aphrodisiac tradition. It tells us as much about how different cultures understood desire and vitality as it does about the plants themselves.
