Flavor Profile

• Damp earth, forest floor
• Old wood, leather
• Dried fruit, camphor, sometimes cocoa
• Low bitterness (especially aged or ripe)

This is one of the few ingestibles where people want that humus / cellar / archive character.

Why it’s compressed

• Historically: easier transport on the Tea Horse Road (ancient trade routes)
• Practically:
  • slows aging
  • stabilizes flavor
  • allows long-term storage

How to use it

1. Pry off a small chunk (tea pick or knife)
2. Rinse briefly with hot water
3. Brew multiple short infusions (gongfu style)

Storage 

• Keep in airflow, not airtight
• Avoid:
  • strong odors (it absorbs them)
  • excessive dryness or humidity
• Think: cool cellar, not sealed jar
